Sinopsis

Supplemental material, in science speak, usually refers to the data and results that are critical for understanding a research study but dont make it into print. In this spirit, we provide a behind-the-scenes look into The Jackson Laboratory. We have conversations with the JAX team about their research, the state of science and its future, and their passions and motivations. We also talk a lot about food.

Episodios

  • Episode 12 - Rethinking Medicine with Robot Docs

    06/04/2017 Duración: 34min

Well we are back again! The Podcast releases have really slowed, and we are sorry about that. We are in the process of rebooting the format to make regular releases a little more manageable, so stay tuned! This episode, we talk with Roel Verhaak about big data analysis of glioma and with Peter Robinson about developing methods for computing clinical data. We dive into the benefits of consortium science, challenges in collecting human genomics data around the globe, the computational future of biology, and the benefits of computational training for all biomedical scientists. And our eventual robot overlords.

  • Episode 11 - Scientists are made out of people!

    11/01/2017 Duración: 27min

First, congratulations if you get the movie reference in the title. In this episode, Anna Lisa and Dave are reunited to chat with Juliet Kapsis and Tyler Chukwu about their experiences at JAX and what it is like to be immersed in a scientific environment for the first time. We also discuss the great educational programs that JAX makes available, portrayals of scientists in popular media, catchy science, delicious pastries, and our oh-so-smooth radio voices. Here’s the link for The Whole Scientist course that was mentioned: https://www.jax.org/education-and-learning/education-calendar/2017/may/the-whole-scientist-bh

We also discuss Elissa's other interest, which include Legos, astronomy, country living and more.

  • Episode 9 – The Neurogenetics of Drug Addiction, Part I

    19/10/2016 Duración: 34min

For this "rescued" episode, Steve Munger makes his return, joining Dave for a discussion with JAX Associate Professor Elissa Chesler. We talk about Elissa’s systems genetics approach for studying complex behaviors and why she is using this approach to study the neurogenetics of addiction. This episode is part 1 of a 2-part series.

  • Episode 8 - Breathing easy with lncRNA

    27/09/2016 Duración: 22min

We’re back! It is grant season, so the podcast schedule is slowing down a bit, but we are still at it. Over an audio backdrop of torrential rain—which kept Anna Lisa from opening the show—we chat with Assistant Professor Adam Williams. We discuss his research into long noncoding RNAs and what they have to do with immune system function. We also talk about asthma, allergic reactions, 3D cell culture systems, the Hygiene Hypothesis, peanuts, English food and the Brexit.

  • Episode 7 - At the heart of clinical genetics

    18/08/2016 Duración: 29min

For Episode 7, we interview physician-scientist and JAX-GM Assistant Professor Travis Hinson. Travis discusses what his joint appointment with UConn Health means for his research into the genomic basis of cardiovascular disorders. We also got to explore Travis’s northward journey from Louisiana and through Philadelphia and Boston before finally settling in Connecticut. You’ll also hear us discuss cool in vitro assays, vacationing in Italy and the Big Easy, Cajun food, fishing (and noodling!), and the majestic Yard Goat.
