The cry of triumph of 8:31 has died away and in the ensueing silence another shadow falls across Paul’s mind to be dispelled by the light of God in Christ.  Why had the Jews not come flocking into His Kingdom?  Why did they not receive Christ as their long awaited Messiah? In these three chapters, we will learn of God’s sovereign purpose toward Israel.  He foreknew Israel; set his love upon her; gave her the privilege of son-ship; held out to her unconditional promises; and appointed her to fulfill a grand role in redemptive history.  But Israel has not come to the appointed destiny.  Paul is heart-broken that the bulk of his fellow-Jews still stand outside God’s kingdom. John 1:11-13:  He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. It would seem that chapter twelve would be the next chapt
