When I had a Black producer tell me my sophisticated love story was unrealistic because it didn't include a knife fight, I became very disillusioned. He was a gatekeeper and now I know how he got to a deal at Warner Bros. Our meeting was on that lot. I interned there a few years prior, and that's when I got my clue that these people weren't creative, but they were the execs in charge.The gatekeepers have been very selective, and over the last 30 years, we have seen them narrow their focus to slave movies and period pieces, and now I know that's been on purpose.Happy to be one of the architects of the new film industry
