This is the first part of a two part interview with mountaineer Gerardo Lopez. Gerardo started climbing at the age of 12 and since then he has travelled around the world, visiting almost 90 countries and climbing most of highest mountains in America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. His most notable achievement to date has been summiting Mount Everest that he accomplished in 2009 becoming, at the age of 30 only the 26th person from Mexico to do so. Over the next year or two, Gerardo would like to take on K2 in Pakistan and do an unsupported crossing in Antarctica. We discuss with him his trip to Everest, his summit without supplemental oxygen after an equipment malfunction, his mindset and what it feels like to stand atop the world's highest mountain.
