If we don't develop discernment and honest appraisal of others, how will we know who to give our car keys? Who to invite in our bed? Who to turn and run away from? It's imperative to see the good in others, but it's also important to see what's bad, to recognize dysfunction and be fully aware of the darkness and destruction that possible in everyone.  Developing mature love and compassion in ourselves often creates the most fertile ground to help others grow and evolve in themselves as well. There is danger in focusing only on the potential good. We can live in denial about what's really real.
