  • Physical Distancing, COVID19 & Brain Injury (Michelle McDonald, Brain Injury Canada)

    07/04/2020 Duración: 33min

After almost five years of solo-hosting, I'm joined in my efforts by Charli Skinner. Charli was on episode 56 - Getting There. Our guest is the Executive Director of Brain Injury Canada, Michelle McDonald.Michelle, Charli and I talk about how those with brain injury, post concussion syndrome (PCS), and others are affected by the constraints of physical distancing (social distancing). People who have experienced brain injury, PCS, among other challenges, are not entirely new to this situation. Many, perhaps most, know this challenge, its difficulties, its uncertainty, all too well. This doesn't make it any easier. When restrictions are eventually lifted, for those coping with brain injury-induced social distancing, life may more or less remain unchanged, but society's understanding of one aspect of life for those living with certain disabilities, might improve. In the meantime, Michelle offers advice on, coping mechanisms, information gathering (use reliable sources!), awareness around people with disabilities,

  • Getting there - Attitude after brain injury (Charli Skinner)

    10/03/2020 Duración: 46min

A mild, moderate, or severe TBI often means many significant changes in every aspect of the injured person's life. For Charli Skinner, life was full of travel, skiing, sailing, and working for a humanitarian organization in London. However, it was after a fall in her own bathroom that led to her brain injury, a flare up of an underlying condition, and post concussion syndrome (PCS) - the effects or which are with her on a daily basis.I learned about Charli's story from an article on Headway (UK brain injury organization) and from her Instagram account @charliski. After reading, I wanted to talk to her about her incredible attitude! Charli approaches life with gusto, even if PCS means she needs to rest. We talk about the invisibility of brain injury, the neuro-fatigue, dysautonomia (Phoenix Concussion Recovery Podcast, Episode 10), and the powerful, truly meaningful learning that can arise from such a difficult situation. • Concussion in Women & Girls (Meaghan Adams, Katie Mitchell, Lauren Ziaks)

    31/01/2020 Duración: 42min

The important differences between men and women are apparent in other aspects of life and health, yet they have been conspicuously absent as part of concussion and brain injury research! Although very important, the differences remain under-appreciated!Episode 53 of Concussion Talk Podcast/episode 13 of Phoenix Concussion Recovery Podcast will hopefully morph into a series all its own, discussing concussions with a focus on how women and men are affected differently from what is ostensibly the same traumatic brain injury. This is the first “panel” discussion, with Lauren Ziaks, PT, DPT, ATC of Phoenix Concussion Recovery & Podcast, Meaghan Adams, PT, PhD of the original “Concussion in Women and Girls” episode, and Concussion Talk Podcast/Phoenix Concussion Recovery Podcast veteran, Katie Mitchell, PhD(c), MScPT, CAT(C). I hope it gets people talking, and I hope it encourages a frank and honest discussion about how brain injuries, including concussions, affect everybody differently! Get bonus content on Patreon
