Repentance, hope, transformation, covenantal God - who God is in the end., we break the covenant and he renews it. Our one hope moving forward is not how good we are at transformation, but how good God is at bringing us back. It’s not up to us. By the way, the Israelites kept breaking the covenant. Base our hope and transformation on his goodness, not our discipline. God who keeps his covenants, and Jesus who came to renew the covenant between us and God. Hope is not in the commitment itself, Israel breaks it. Hope is in Christ.

When the enemy fails in his attacks from the outside, he then begins to attack from within; and one of his favorite weapons is selfishness. If he can get us thinking only about ourselves and what we want, then he will win the victory before we realize that he is even at work. Selfishness means putting myself at the center of everything and insisting on getting what I want when I want it. It means exploiting others so I can be happy and taking advantage of them just so I can have my own way. Today, Nehemiah challenges us to "Stop and Look around for others." So let's begin this morning by trying to get a better handle on exactly what the problem was, shall we?

With the physical eyes, our oppositions seem to be against flesh and blood or with the people who get in our way like Sanballat or Tobiah. But the ultimate reality is that we are in a spiritual battle that can only be fought with spiritual weapons. Under and behind all physical manifestations of struggle is a spiritual reality. And that's why Eph. 6:12 warns us "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." What seems to be a jealous opposition from the two outsiders really reveals the "secret of the Fox." Behind God's calling for Israel's restoration, lies the spiritual battle before Nehemiah.
