Baseball On This Date

Today is August 4, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1983. Today we're in Toronto at Exhibition Stadium for an evening game between the Yankees and the Blue Jays. The Jays will win the game 6-2, but the true stars of the day will be Yankees outfielder Dave Winfield and a seagull who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Today is August 3, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1921. We're in Chicago, maybe enjoying a little prohibition-style bathtub gin because the mood here is festive following the acquittal of eight Chicago White Sox players indicted on conspiracy charges for their role in the 1919 World Series scandal. But the mood is about to change as word spreads that Federal Judge and Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis has laid a lifetime ban on all eight men.

Today is August 2, 2016. Travel back with me to this day in 1938. We're in Brooklyn at Ebbets Field where we'll watch a double-header between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals, and where Dodger's General Manager Larry MacPhail will introduce a specially dyed batch of bright yellow baseballs in an effort to spice up the game.
