Eyres On The Road

The 29th installment in their ongoing series on "3-letter lessons" is the dual success formula "W&P" which on the temporal level is WORK AND PLAN, involving setting goals, creating plans, and working to achieve our own ends. But the Eyres suggest a higher, more spiritual formula for success where W&P stands for scriptural couplets: WATCH AND PRAY, WONDER AND PONDER, WAIT AND PATIENCE, AND WORSHIP AND PRAISE.

In today's episode, the Eyres tackle the question of whether AI is our friend or foe, of whether Artificial Intelligence can control us, can develop intimate relationships with us, and can eventually destroy us. Richard and Linda juxtaposition the hopelessness of an atheist view where we are overmatched by the first Alien Intelligence to ever exist with the hope of a faith-based view where there is a Divine Intelligence that has a plan for us all.

Today the Eyres return to their series on 3-letter lessons--simple three letter "word-pegs" that we can think about often and that can influence our priorities and actions. Today's word is the ever-interesting question of WHO. Who are you? Who are you becoming? Richard and Linda suggest an exercise where you answer the question ten times, prioritizing your answers, and then ask how much time you are spending on the important answers.

The Eyres are casting today from Bear Lake where their annual reunion is just concluding, and they are looking back over the chaos, confusion, learning and beauty of having all their kids and grandkids together in one confined space for a week. They explore the many different ways and means by which families can get together and communicate, and how they are always a mixed bag, but always, in the end WORTH THE EFFORT.

Richard and Linda are casting from London today, from the small Surrey village called Epsom where they lived for four years--three as Mission Leaders for their Church, and another year ten years later where they wrote their book Teaching Your Children Values. On the show, they reflect on what they have learned from the British, how they feel their children have benefited (all went to British schools), and how London has become their second home.

In this episode, the Eyres focus on the flawed concept of personal independence, pointing out that, in truth, we are all completely interdependent on each other and dependent on God. "Independence" is the third deceiver, along with "control" and "ownership," that rob us of happiness; and Richard and Linda's new word "Synergicity" (a combination of "synergy" and "synchronicity") is the alternative spiritual attitude and the antidote.

In this episode the Eyres continue their mini-series on Replacing the Three Deceivers with the Three Alternative Attitudes. The second deceiver is the false and pride-instilling concept of Ownership, and the alternative is the humility and gratitude generating attitude of Stewardship. Making this transition can create a completely new and more joyful approach to life.

In the second episode of this mini-series on The Happiness Paradox, the Eyres examine how our obsession with control make us frustrated and unhappy. They ask us to acknowledge how little we actually control, and to be grateful that the real control lies with God. The alternative to a Control Attitude is a Serendipitous Attitude, and the true definition of Serendipity involves greater sensual and spiritual awareness and acceptance.

The Eyres have just returned from Switzerland where they were with their son Tal who is a writer and thinker in the area of Positive Psychology, which led to discussions about the illusive concept of happiness and well-being. So on today's show, Richard and Linda discuss how the very three things we think will bring us joy--control, ownership, and independence--actually rob us of happiness and undermine our well-being. This is the first of a six part series on discovering true JOY.

As April gets under way, the Eyres challenge us to put a new twist in our Gratitude Journals by keeping track of what we ask God for each day in prayer and of questions we ask to other people. The theory is that asking is the other side of the coin of gratitude. What we thoughtfully ask for makes us more aware of what we already have.
