Influenza, more commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness. It spreads when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk, projecting tiny droplets of the virus up to six feet away. Due to the increasing number of confirmed flu cases in Oregon, area hospitals have announced their enhanced precautions season to help keep patients, visitors and staff safe. In January, time-off benefits for most unclassified employees will change to a PTO – or Paid Time Off – system. Under PTO, employees will still earn the same amount of time off, but there will be differences in how the time can be used. And this month, employees can elect two voluntary components of the program – a cash-out of PTO hours and a one-time transfer of sick leave into the new PTO bank. Every year, hundreds of thousands of hospital patients in the United States experience falls – and up to 50 percent of these incidents result in injury. Research shows therapy animals offer true healing powers that, for many patients, complement the results of traditional medical treatment. OHSU Doernbecher is one of only a handful across the U.S., with two full-time hospital facility dogs who provide love, support and companionship to the hospital’s young patients, family members and staff. October is National Disability Awareness Month. For nearly half a century, the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at OHSU’s Institute on Development and Disability has been improving the lives of people with disabilities throughout Oregon. One of its programs, the summer internship program, has not only helped educate students about people with disabilities, it has changed many students’ lives.

Dr. Albert Chi will deliver the 2018 Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Address on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Putting on an event like this is no small task. Neither is preparing to speak in front of hundreds. More than half of faculty and residents in the United States are suffering from burnout. The national organization that accredits residency and fellowship programs at institutions is trying to change that.
