Eighty percent of trauma fatalities are due to uncontrolled hemorrhage from an extremity. To help, OHSU is partnering with the Stop the Bleed coalition along with state and local agencies to teach hand-on classes in tourniquet application, applying direct pressure and packing an injury using gauze. The Unity Center for Behavioral Health recently marked its one-year anniversary. Legacy Health, OHSU, Kaiser Permanente and Adventist Health opened the 24-hour behavioral and mental health services center on Jan. 31, 2017, to provide immediate psychiatric care and recovery services for adults and adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis. In September, Hurricane Maria left a path of destruction across Puerto Rico. Two employees from OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center traveled to Puerto Rico to help rebuild the Caribbean Primate Research Center, which was hit hard by the disaster. OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital is now verified as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and a Level 1 Site for Children's Surgery, according to the American College of Surgeons. Doernbecher is the first in the Pacific Northwest, and one of only five pediatric hospitals nationally, to earn dual verification. And later, a new pedestrian bridge will provide an alternate connection between the Casey Eye Institute and Kohler Pavilion.
