Last year, the flu vaccine protected an estimated 5 million people from getting sick. Getting vaccinated reduces flu illnesses, doctor visits and missed work and school. It also prevents flu-related hospitalizations. As the state's academic health center, OHSU strives to ensure access for Oregonians who require tertiary and quaternary care. Numerous efforts are underway to manage hospital occupancy and ensure the right patient receives the right care in the right place at the right time.

OHSU recently received the 2017 Vizient Quality Leadership Award. This award recognizes OHSU for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. Gene editing, a potential vaccine for HIV and hormone replacement therapy are just a few of the breakthroughs that have come out of OHSU’s West Campus – home to the Oregon National Primate Research Center and the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. OHSU employees will have a chance to tour the campus later this month.

StoryCorps was first created to preserve and share humanity’s stories to build connections between people. OHSU began opening (and publishing) its treasure trove of stories with StoryCorps Legacy in May.

Affirmative action has been in the news lately with reports that the Department of Justice may direct resources into “intentional race-based discrimination” at universities. Magnet re-designation by OHSU

An OHSU study published in the journal Nature made international headlines recently. But how does a study become a headline? And what happens when the news breaks before it’s supposed to? Guests include: Erik Robinson, senior media relations specialist

A rare total solar eclipse will pass over Oregon this month, bringing record numbers of tourists to the state. OHSU is actively involved in planning for this once-in-a-lifetime event and is helping get the word out about how to safely view the eclipse. The OHSU-PSU School of Public Health recently received full accreditation. The school brings together faculty and students from both universities under one administrative structure, and soon, under one roof. Guests include: Dr. David Bangsberg, founding dean of the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health

The OHSU Foundation raised $172 million this past fiscal year, which ended on June 30. It was the largest fundraising year outside of the Knight Cancer Challenge. And the Oregon Legislature wrapped up its 78th legislative session this month. Construction is in full swing in heart of the South Waterfront with the building of the Center for Health & Healing 2 and Gary and Christine Rood Family Pavilion. When the buildings open, it will change how OHSU and the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute deliver care and services to patients and their families. But some of the building’s biggest innovations began before construction even began.
