  • Episode 18 : 3 Dots and a Dash Cocktail

    Here is another great episode on tiki cocktails with this one featuring a classic: Three Dots and a Dash. This cocktail is a Don the Beachcomber's original (who is Don the Beachcomber?...well listen and we will go through his career and what he has done for tiki culture). The cocktail: 3 dots and a dash was made during World War II and was a Morse code for "V". What is the significance of the "V"?It meant victory and was also used by Winston Churchill who popularized the symbol and eventually converted into a sign for peace. When making a cocktail using the "grandma pasta sauce process", you might have to tweak it to your liking. How do you do that? The "Straw" test is the answer.     Hey guys we are back! We want to welcome our new listeners to the show and please leave any comments you would like to leave for us. The episode we talk about a classic tiki cocktail made by Don the Beachcomber and yes clones after such as Trader Vic's.This drink was made during world war II and so aviation was a big deal during this time as "if you owned the skies, you owned the land". Several clones of this drink came after named things such as: Jet Pilot, Ace Pilot, Space Pilot and even Astronaut. We finally give you guys the recipe for Falernum which is a tiki secret ingredient til lately thanks to Beachbum Berry's work on tiki recipes. We do give you another recipe from Steve Crane's luau restaurant who was a famous bartender during the tiki first generation.     This is the season for pumpkin spice drinks! But wait..pumpkin belongs in a pie so we are going to do cinnamon spice rum drinks. These drinks follow the evolution of drinks from a basic recipe and add another element/ingredient and now a new recipe. This show will cover 4 drinks today! Yes 4. Well, we have one called the Flip from the 1700's, Hot toddy from 1786, Jerry Thomas's (1862) who was one of the first bartenders to publish his recipes to the world, and finally Martha Stewart. Yes, cooking with Craig and Cam.We will talk about a special tool to make the Flip cocktail that was used back in the tavern days (1700's). Loggerhead ( and no not the turtle) that would be heated up and sear the drink to perfection. If a brawl broke out, you got a weapon to defend yourself as well.
