    Women’s sports events are less attractive because the level is lower. This is an often-used argument to justify female athletes earning less and getting less attention. The argument however, lacks context. Men don’t play better because they are men. They compete on a higher level better because they receive loads of support. In today’s interview on Local Matters, we talk to Luxembourg national team football player Amy Thompson about the inequalities between men and women that continue to exist in Luxembourg’s professional football.

    Oakland is a city of just over 4 hundred thousand people located in California’s bay area across the water from its bigger and far more famous sister city, San Francisco. In the early 1900s a wave of jazz musicians arrived with the migration of labourers that moved to the bay area from places like New Orleans to work on the railroads that were being built at the time. By the 1960s there was already a highly developed jazz scene in the city.     On international women's day, Tom was joined by Ambre Schulz from Passerell to talk about the Istanbul Convention and how it has been implemented in Luxembourg. The Istanbul Convention is an international treaty signed by the council of Europe which acts as a legal framework for the protection of women from violence, abuse and persecution. Passerell is an organisation that offers legal guidance and assistance to Asylum seekers and refugees in Luxembourg. As Ambre describes, Luxembourg has introduced measures to implement the Istanbul convention however there are still instances where asylum seekers fleeing persecution in their own countries are receiving rejections to their appeals for asylum due to misinterpretation or lack of understanding surrounding the Istanbul Convention. The multidisciplinary and multivenue festival which takes place in the beautiful setting of the Clausen valley is always a highlight of Luxembourg's Summer live music schedule. Festival programmer Michel Welter joined Tom on the show this morning to talk about what the festival has in store. After the announcement in December that Phoenix would be headlining, Den Atelier recently announced the rest of the festival's line up which focuses on bringing the best in up and coming talent next to legendary headliners to the grand duchy. Highlights this year include the likes of Dublin punk rockers Sprints, Up and coming Belgian shoegaze pop band The Haunted Youth, the sensational all female youth ensemble from Benin, Star Feminine Band and newly formed project of local hero Bartelby Delicate Englbrt.     In the late 1970s and 1980s Manchester became hugely significant in the evolution of post punk and then dance music. Factory records was an independent record label that was started in 1978 by a duo called Alan Erasmus and Tony Wilson. Early releases on the label included singles by A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, The Durutti Column Orchestral Manoeuvres in The Dark. The first full album released on the label a certain LP called ‘Unknown Pleasures ’ by a new band on the scene called Joy Division. Joy Division was formed of singer Ian Curtis, Guitarist and Keyboard player Bernard Summer, Bassist Peter Hook and Drummer Stephen Morris. They developed a sparse and melancholy style of playing - driven by angular guitar riffs and direct drums that made them one of the pioneering bands of the post-punk movement. Joy Division have gone on to become a cult band of legendary status but in 1980 only 2 years after the release of Unknown Pleasures, on the eve of the band’s first tour of America and 2 months befo

    Unicef is a charity that provides support for children in need around the world. Today Paul Heber from Unicef Luxembourg joined Tom in the studio to talk about the organization's activities in Poland where they are supporting newly arrived refugees who have fled the conflict in Ukraine. Paul Heber is head of communication for Unicef Luxembourg. He recently returned from a trip to Poland where he saw first hand the work that Unicef is doing to help children that have feld the war in Ukraine. These young people have often been traumatised by witnessing the horrors of war. Their lives have been disrupted as they have been forced to leave their homes to find safety. Unicef works to provide aid to them in the form of psychological support, housig aid, care packages and access to education. Since 1995 Karen Lancel and Herman Maat have been collaborating as artists exploring the dynamics of humankinds interactions with technology. Their installation Kissing Data Symphony does just that by inviting participants to monitor their brain activity as they embrace in a kiss. The data from the brain readings is then projected around the sitting participants and simultaneously transformed into music that soundtracks the kiss.     Radio Luxembourg was a pioneering and hugely popular radio station that broadcasted to millions of people around Europe, on 208 Medium wave, from right here in Luxembourg, from 1933 until 1992. One of the famous DJs on the station in the 1950s-70s was Barry Alldis and today Tom was joined on the Breakfast Show by his daughter Janet Alldis who has recently released a song in tribute to her father. Barry Alldis moved to Luxembourg in 1956 to begin working at Radio Luxembourg, the first commercial radio station in Europe. For 10 years he worked as the chief announcer on the station and built up a huge following around Europe for his groundbreaking radio shows that were often the first place that you could hear new hit records being played. In the 1960s Alldis moved to London and worked as a presenter at the BBC but in the 1970s he returned to Luxembourg with his family and presented the Sunday evening Top 20 show on Radio Luxembourg until his death in 1982. In order to encourage more girls and women to play sport, the Rugby Club de Luxembourg is running a Rugby/Touch experience on Sunday 5th March from 10am-1pm. Girls and women from 8yrs upwards are invited to come to the Boy Konen terrain to try out the sport of Rugby contact and Touch. Most women think of Rugby as a male dominated sport. In fact the non contact form called Touch Rugby is ideally suited to women and in countries such as Australia and New Zealand is one of the main female sports.
